    Parity-violating asymmetry in γd→n⃗p\gamma d \to \vec{n}p with a pionless effective theory

    Nuclear parity violation is studied with polarized neutrons in the photodisintegration of the deuteron at low energies. A pionless effective field theory with di-baryon fields is used for the investigation. Hadronic weak interactions are treated by parity-violating di-baryon-nucleon-nucleon vertices, which have undetermined coupling contants. A parity-violating asymmetry in the process is calculated for the incident photon energy up to 30 MeV. If experimental data for the parity-violating asymmetry become available in the future, we will be able to determine the unknown coupling contants in the parity-violating vertices.Comment: 4 pages.     Microlensing Binaries with Candidate Brown Dwarf Companions

    Brown dwarfs are important objects because they may provide a missing link between stars and planets, two populations that have dramatically different formation histories. In this paper, we present the candidate binaries with brown dwarf companions that are found by analyzing binary microlensing events discovered during the 2004-2011 observation seasons. Based on the low mass ratio criterion of q < 0.2, we found seven candidate events: OGLE-2004-BLG-035, OGLE-2004-BLG-039, OGLE-2007-BLG-006, OGLE-2007-BLG-399/MOA-2007-BLG-334, MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172, MOA-2011-BLG-149, and MOA-201-BLG-278/OGLE-2011-BLG-012N. Among them, we are able to confirm that the companions of the lenses of MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149 are brown dwarfs by determining the mass of the lens based on the simultaneous measurement of the Einstein radius and the lens parallax. The measured masses of the brown dwarf companions are 0.02 ± 0.01 M_☉ and 0.019 ± 0.002 M_☉ for MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149, respectively, and both companions are orbiting low-mass M dwarf host stars. More microlensing brown dwarfs are expected to be detected as the number of lensing events with well-covered light curves increases with new-generation searches

    Resonant pairing between Fermions with unequal masses

    We study the pairing between Fermions of different masses, especially at the unitary limit. At equal populations, the thermodynamic properties are identical with the equal mass case provided an appropriate rescaling is made. At unequal populations, for sufficiently light majority species, the system does not phase separate. For sufficiently heavy majority species, the phase separated normal phase have a density larger than that of the superfluid. For atoms in harmonic traps, the density profiles for unequal mass Fermions can be drastically different from their equal-mass counterparts.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Polynomial combinatorial algorithms for skew-bisubmodular function minimization

(SIAM J Comput 43:1064–1084, 2014) introduced a concept of skew bisubmodularity, as a generalization of bisubmodularity, in their complexity dichotomy theorem for valued constraint satisfaction problems over the three-value domain, and Huber and Krokhin (SIAM J Discrete Math 28:1828–1837, 2014) showed the oracle tractability of minimization of skew-bisubmodular functions. Fujishige et al. (Discrete Optim 12:1–9, 2014) also showed a min–max theorem that characterizes the skew-bisubmodular function minimization, but devising a combinatorial polynomial algorithm for skew-bisubmodular function minimization was left open. In the present paper we give first combinatorial (weakly and strongly) polynomial algorithms for skew-bisubmodular function minimization

    An optical shutter based on charged particles is presented. The output light intensity of the proposed device has an intrinsic dependence on the interparticle spacing between charged particles, which can be controlled by varying voltages applied to the control electrodes.     Exact dimer ground state of the two dimensional Heisenberg spin system SrCu_2(BO_3)_2

    The two dimensional Heisenberg model for SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 has the exact dimer ground state which was proven by Shastry and Sutherland almost twenty years ago. The critical value of the quantum phase transition from the dimer state to the N\'{e}el ordered state is determined. Analysis of the experimental data shows that SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 has the dimer ground state but is close to the transition point, which leads to the unusual temperature dependence of the susceptibility.     Superfluid stability in BEC-BCS crossover

    We consider a dilute atomic gas of two species of fermions with unequal concentrations under a Feshbach resonance. We find that the system can have distinct properties due to the unbound fermions. The uniform state is stable only when either (a) beyond a critical coupling strength, where it is a gapless superfluid, or (b) when the coupling strength is sufficiently weak, where it is a normal Fermi gas mixture.     Dielectric constants of Ir, Ru, Pt, and IrO2: Contributions from bound charges

    We investigated the dielectric functions ϵ\epsilon(ω\omega) of Ir, Ru, Pt, and IrO2_2, which are commonly used as electrodes in ferroelectric thin film applications. In particular, we investigated the contributions from bound charges ϵb\epsilon^{b}(ω\omega), since these are important scientifically as well as technologically: the ϵ1b\epsilon_1^{b}(0) of a metal electrode is one of the major factors determining the depolarization field inside a ferroelectric capacitor. To obtain ϵ1b\epsilon_1^{b}(0), we measured reflectivity spectra of sputtered Pt, Ir, Ru, and IrO2 films in a wide photon energy range between 3.7 meV and 20 eV. We used a Kramers-Kronig transformation to obtain real and imaginary dielectric functions, and then used Drude-Lorentz oscillator fittings to extract ϵ1b\epsilon_1^{b}(0) values. Ir, Ru, Pt, and IrO2_2 produced experimental ϵ1b\epsilon_1^{b}(0) values of 48±\pm10, 82±\pm10, 58±\pm10, and 29±\pm5, respectively, which are in good agreement with values obtained using first-principles calculations. These values are much higher than those for noble metals such as Cu, Ag, and Au because transition metals and IrO2_2 have such strong d-d transitions below 2.0 eV. High ϵ1b\epsilon_1^{b}(0) values will reduce the depolarization field in ferroelectric capacitors, making these materials good candidates for use as electrodes in ferroelectric applications.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    CTLA-4 rs231775 and risk of acute renal graft rejection: an updated meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis

    Contrasting results exist on the association between CTLA-4 rs231775 and acute rejection in kidney transplant recipients. We herein conducted an updated systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA) to clarify this relationship and to establish whether the current evidence is sufficient to draw firm conclusions. In addition, noteworthiness of significant pooled odds ratios (ORs) was estimated by false positive report probability (FPRP). A comprehensive search was performed through PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Cochrane Library and Open Grey up to October 2019. Fifteen independent cohorts, including a total of 5,401 kidney transplant recipients, were identified through the systematic review. Overall, no association was detected with the allelic (OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.88\u20131.30, P = 0.49), dominant (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.73\u20131.22, P = 0.66) or the recessive (OR 1.18, 95% CI 0.97\u20131.43, P = 0.096) model of CTLA-4 rs231775. In each genetic model, the cumulative Z-curve in TSA crossed the futility boundary and entered the\ua0futility\ua0area. In addition, none of the significant genetic comparisons detected in the subsequent and sensitivity analyses or in previously reported meta-analyses were found to be noteworthy by FPRP. In conclusion, this study provides strong evidence that CTLA-4 rs231775 is not a clinically-relevant genetic risk determinant of acute rejection after renal transplantation
